Past Stories Of Mr Rabbit In His Quest For Confidance
Introducing Mr. Rabbit
I hate talking to lots of people.
But I’ve been told to introduce myself.
I’m Mr Rabbit.
I’m not related to Roger or Peter or Bugs or Br’er or Thumper.
They’re make-believe rabbits anyway.
My friends just call me Rabbit but you can call me Mr Rabbit.
I’m sure we’ll become friends soon though.
I do have a first name, but it’s awful.
Other rabbits weren’t so nice to me when I was growing up.
They’d tease me about my first name.
So I just go by Mr Rabbit.
I live in a burrow under the old stone wall on the boundary of Cabbage Tree Swamp.
Our burrow has been here for over 120 years when there actually was a swamp.
My great-great-great-grandfather used to watch the cricketers play in the summer.
Then it rained, and the swamp got wet and mucky.
Now there’s a great big stadium where the swamp used to be, that hosts champion teams and holds more than 40,000 people.
It’s amazing to see how a city develops.
On the other side of the old stone wall is a nice garden with vegetables, roses, beautiful flowers and plants of all kinds underneath a big walnut tree.
The owners tend it confidently.
Which is something I’m lacking in.
Confidence.
Sure, I can steal vegetables and do the basics of rabbit life, but I have big plans.
To run a successful business that supports my burrow for years to come.
I want to speak in front of lots of people to promote myself.
And my business.
To be the best rabbit in all the burrows around Auckland.
I’m just a little stuck with what to say and how to say it.
Hopefully, I’ll learn from those around me.
There are lots of knowledgeable friends in this world.
Help is always at hand.
That’s what my aunt Gladys used to say.
Because when I have confidence, I’ll be unstoppable.

Helane Conquers Everest
She threw her hands in the air with delight.
It was over.
“No more,” she said.
“I’ve conquered my own Everest”.
Mr Rabbit was excited for her.
He had watched nervously when she arrived.
Rabbit was sitting in the garden on his fold up deck chair that his Aunt Gladys had given him, warming his back in the late morning sun, ready with his binoculars to get a good view of the action.
She was fidgety, and you could tell she was nervous.
Good, nervous, though.
If they were bad nerves, she probably wouldn’t have showed up.
So to see her exuberance at the end made Mr Rabbit a very happy Rabbit.
As were the crew of helpers, making her look as good as she could be.
A few months earlier, Helane’s coach challenged her to do something different. To get out of her comfort zone and experience something she previously wouldn’t be caught dead doing.
Something that scared her.
Because on the other side of fear is everything you’ve ever wanted.
Helane had started working just two years earlier as a business broker after 20 years running her own wholesale bakery and café with 27 staff.
She knew she had to start promoting herself on socials and this was the best way to do it.
Recording videos is hard but Helane found the confidence and got the job done.
She’s now got 10 videos to show her skills.
And a lot more confidence.
Over the last few weeks, she’s broken down those barriers that previously held her back.
She wrote 10 scripts with guidance from Mr Rabbit’s knowledgeable friends.
That talked about her knowledge of business broking and getting her clients the best outcome.
That framed her customer success stories.
And built some resonance around who she was so she’d attract “her” people.
Go Helane.
Later that night in the burrow in Mount Eden, after Mr Rabbit had eaten a big bowl of vegetable stew, he leaned back on his favourite chair with the biggest grin on his face.
He thought “if Helane can do it, then so can I”.
He closed his eyes and dreamed of being a confident Rabbit who could do anything.

Some people dream and make it happen.
Some let their fears control them.
So, like Helane, stare adversity in the face and take it on.
This is an example of one of her 10x videos she filmed this month.
An Unsavory Incident
Sing us a song, you're the piano man. Sing us a song tonight.
Over and over in his head.
Then he woke up with a jerk.
That song, yet again, was playing in his head.
Another bad dream.
Mr Rabbit looked around his room in the Mount Eden burrow and came to the realisation of where he was.
He was safe.
Alone in his bedroom.
He started to sob.
I miss my mum and dad, he thought to himself.
And my sister.
The tears rolled down his cheeks as he remembered the good memories he had of his parents and sister.
Sob.
But they’re gone.
Another big tear plopped down on his orange pajamas.
All because of that piano-man-guy.
If he hadn't played at the stadium that night, maybe they’d still be here in the burrow.
Mr Rabbit wiped away the blobs of water under his eyes and swung his legs to the floor to sit up on the bed.
He looked over at a framed picture of his mum and dad on the side table.
They were so courageous that night.
He remembered back to that summery December day in 2022.
When the piano man came to town.
35,000 people visited Cabbage Tree Swamp that day.
The streets were swimming with people and that’s good news for us rabbits.
Cos they leave behind things that we want.
Or they get engrossed in their music or rugby and we “borrow” the foodie things sitting next to them.
Mr Rabbit's older sister, Savannah, his mother, Betsy, and father, Atticus were excited about a night of music and looting.
They were singing River of Dreams as they left the burrow at 5pm.
Uncle Vernon, Aunt Gladys, the seven cousins and me, all waving goodbye.
Hoping for a tremendous feast later that night.
But they never returned.
We waited.
9pm, 10pm, 11pm.
Nothing.
We went to bed wondering if they’d come home in the morning.
But they didn’t.
Their beds were made, just like they’d left them the day they departed.
“What has become of my family?”
To this day, Mr Rabbit is befuddled as to what happened to his parents on the 3rd December 2022.
“I will search for answers till the day I die” he said aloud.
I will never let it go.
Mr Rabbit pulled out his walkman from his drawer, slipped the headphones over his ears and pushed play.
This would cheer him up.
It started mid-song.
You better - lose yourself in the music, the moment
You own it, you better never let it go (go)
You only get one shot, do not miss your chance to blow
This opportunity comes once in a lifetime.
…
Like Mr Rabbit, we all have our personal cross to bear.
We’ll feel alone at times, but we must stay the course.
To achieve what we’re here to do.
To find that driver deep in us to push through the boundaries and achieve greatness.
And in this week's story, one of our readers contributed to the storyline.
