You know when you were eight years old, at school and the teacher got you to come up to the front of the class to talk for two minutes about your summer break and when you turned around to face the 30-something kids looking at you... you froze.
Beads of sweat appeared on your forehead, and you felt your knees tremble. You stammered your way through your talk, and you vowed to never do a talk again.
Well, what I do as a speaker coach is to prepare you for your talk, business presentation or on video, so that innocent eight-year-old says with confidence, "That was easy, let's do it again."
I overcame a stutter as a kid to become a commercial radio broadcaster for 10 years; speaking live, on air, under pressure, to thousands.
I work with coaches and consultants to help them influence and convert clients when they speak.
When we work together, you don’t just learn techniques, you learn the mindset, skill set, and inner strength that helped me find my voice, and you’ll discover you can find yours too.

Roma boosts her profile and client bookings as a successful public speaker with 1:1 coaching
Give me five minutes of your time to share the inspiring story of how Roma, a financial adviser from Roma & Co, learnt to be a more powerful presenter thanks to my 1:1 coaching.
Over the last seven years, Roma & Co have supported over 500 clients to achieve their financial goals. Before working with me, Roma was no stranger to public speaking. She’d been a member of Toastmasters and delivered dozens of presentations.
Clearly fab at what she does, waffling was holding her back. Ask her to talk about subjects like financial literacy, investing, and KiwiSaver, and she had a habit (like most people I coach) of diving into too much detail.
This meant her appointments could go over time, and her presentations were not as slick as they could be.
Unlike some of my clients, Roma’s not shy of the spotlight.
She regularly trains workplaces and inspires larger crowds of fifty or more at events, including Auckland Young Professionals (AYP).
She’s the first to admit:
“If you start talking to me about finance, I’m super passionate. You get me on a topic and I'm off."
While I’m not here to dull her passion, I knew that with some 1:1 coaching she could become a highly successful, succinct, and sought-after public speaker.
Let’s start with Roma’s top five goals:
Bringing out Roma’s inner storyteller
Even with our shoddy attention spans, a story holds our interest because it speaks to our emotional side. This is the part of us that convinces us that we can trust and relate to the speaker.
I coached Roma on storytelling techniques to deliver powerful intros and outros, and to leave her audience eager to work with her.
Storytelling devices also create a framework which Roma now uses to keep her client meetings on track, too.
Succinct, interactive, and memorable presentations
Following my advice, Roma regularly uses the online polling platform, Slido, so audiences can interact with her workshop content.
This is perfect for her younger audiences. AYP are typically 18-35 years old, and they expect workshops to be digitally interactive.
Roma used to speak too quickly, too. A problem I see all too often, she’d risk losing her audience’s attention, and they’d miss crucial details. After coaching, she now commands any stage by slowing down, repeating key points for emphasis, and pausing to allow information to sink in.
Adjusting habits starts with awareness.
Roma says my coaching has helped her notice when she uses filler words and be aware of how she sounds. Thanks to some adjustments, she is consistently making the ideal first impression.
How does working with me compare to group work?
Roma appreciates how my feedback comes from my professional broadcasting background, and it’s more direct and personalised than group-style coaching.
“With John, I can be myself. I can say this is how I feel. And then John will say let’s try this.”
I tell you how it is to bring out the best in you
I see too many presenters weaken their message with too many slides.
Roma reaches out to me when prepping for upcoming presentations. I tell her when she’s gone overboard on the slides, so she knows what content should stay and what should go.
She also catches herself in the moment when she’s speaking too quickly or going off topic, and she’ll adjust.
It’s like having me on her shoulder coaching her to:
“Take your time, steady your breathing, stay on topic, pause.”
Roma’s gained so much from coaching.

Challenge:
Open ground provides a supportive environment that nurtures Year 13 students' entrepreneurial skills, encourages their personal growth, and equips them with the confidence and knowledge needed to pursue their entrepreneurial endeavors. It provides practical experience by creating and running actual business ventures - each student is tasked with creating a product or service, and they had a dragons den event upcoming where they had to pitch for legitimate funding.
Deliverables:
I was engaged to help the boys use stories to sell their products. I took them through some story structures and helped them create a story that introduced their product and the problem it solved. I provided ongoing online coaching for those that wanted post-workshop help. The Dragons Den event is in June 2025, so I'll update you about the winner and why the dragons chose them (hopefully because of their story).
Outcome:
Openground Director, Ant Ford 1 May 2025

Challenge:
Simon is the director of Elevate Sales and he wanted the direction and confidence to show up on video on LinkedIn. He knew that if he was to grow his business, he needed to invest in video to help his audience understand the value he could provide.
Deliverables:
I worked with Simon for 8 weeks on the fundamentals of video, including content planning, scripting, rehearsal, mobile phone and production set-up and editing.
Outcome:
Simon released his first video and received huge engagement from his first post and has subsequently gone on to consistently post videos to LinkedIn.

Challenge:
A program by Cheil, Samsung's global marketing agency, aimed to put sales ambassadors into retail environments like JB HiFi, One NZ, Noel Leeming, Harvey Norman, Spark and 2 Degrees, to educate and sell products direct to the public. For the categories of TV and mobile.
Deliverables:
I was engaged to deliver this training on the back of my successful campaigns training brand ambassadors for Sony, LG and Huawei, and again I trained 65+ young people in face-to-face sales and engagement over three days. This started with the S24 mobile model and the 2024 range of TVs.
I incorporated storytelling into the training with games, exercises and training structures to ensure they were retail-ready. This training has continued throughout 2024/2025.
Outcome:
Retail Experience Director at Cheil, Annette Loughnane, 18 Jan 2024
Samsung visited the stores and the feedback has been positive. They tested them and their product and sales knowledge was second to none, thanks to you. Some stores now have a TV expert and a mobile brand ambassador, and they are bonding well. A fantastic result given the challenges of you training them online in India with the technology we faced along the way. You have again helped with a great result - thank you"

Russell Clark was a feature presenter at the 2023 Auckland Home Show, and he wanted to get his presentation right.
Deliverables:
Over 8 weeks, I helped Russell with the structure of his talk, which included storytelling, audience engagement and public speaker training.

Challenge:
In late 2022, well-established NZ accountancy firm Gilligan Sheppard wanted to use podcasting as a tool to deliver their expertise online to their future and current customers. But they didn't know where to start.
Deliverables:
Over 12 weeks, I worked with their marketing team on planning, studio set-up with microphones and recording equipment, editing, presenting and distribution, so they had a plan to deliver one 30-minute podcast per week.
Outcome:
Hosted by Lisa Garrud, they delivered 52 podcast episodes of their podcast Boxers & Briefs.

Challenge:
Phil Hall was the 2024 President of Eden Rugby, and he wasn't confident when he talked to members every Saturday after the game.
Deliverables:
Over 6-8 weeks, I helped Phil develop the right content that would resonate with his members, to share stories of members and his overall public speaking skills, so he was both confident and engaging.
Outcome:
Watch Phil talk about some of his challenges prior to working with me and the outcome he has moving forward.

Challenge:
A mix of under-grad, post-grad and business community students pitched their proposed business to a panel of eight judges in the six-week Velocity program, and they needed help with their presentation.
Deliverables:
A storytelling and presentation workshop for 30 students to help them uncover their "why" or "insight" stories to better connect them and their business idea with the panel and some practical presentation tools to use on the day of their pitch.
Outcome:
The students all had time in front of the room telling their personal insight stories. They did group work to record their stories and we finished with exercises on warming up, gestures, body language, voice, breathing and pausing.
The workshop you did today was eye-opening. It makes me realise the importance of using your voice and body, and telling things as a interesting personal story to make a connection. I hope to not forget the confidence you showed today so I can channel some of it!
Thank you so much John! The workshop was amazing - feeling a lot more inspired about the pitch now.
Thank you, John. You'll be pleased to know we heeded your advice and opted for a story! And we won.
Thank you John! Really appreciate it and your motivation today. Super inspiring and amazing to hear your story. My cousin also has a stutter growing up and reminded me of that. Thank you for your time, love your charisma and capability of your confidence to captivate an audience!
Thanks John. That was an entertaining workshop. Loved it.

Great session John! Exactly what I needed yesterday! It was refreshing to get to know each other on a deeper, authentic level, and go beyond what we would talk about everyday.
Really good session, John. It was awesome getting to know the team on a more personal level and developing deeper trust. Well done.
