MEET JOHN MAYBURY

John Maybury Video Coach NZ

It was a life-long dream and I was constantly inspired by the company I kept - musicians, broadcasters, entertainers, comedians, singers and performers. They all brought personality and verve and I was hooked.

But there was a problem.

I stuttered.

I felt so hopeless, despairing and dejected.

It was at school when things were at their worst.

I remember rocking up to the tuck shop and I had planned out EXACTLY what I was going to say when it was my time to be served. Meat pie, donut and an apple. How easy is that?

Nah, it wasn’t.

Sure enough I’d get to the front of the queue, surrounded by pre-pubescent boys hungry for someone stupid to pick on, and the person behind the counter would say, “Hi there, what would you like for lunch today?”

C-C-C-C-C-Could I P-P-P-Please have a Do-Do-Donut and a meat….

You get the picture.

I was humiliated. I just couldn't get it right.

I lacked any sort of confidence around people, especially in public, so how was I going to fulfill my destiny and get behind a microphone.

But I was determined.

The year was 1982 and I was 13 years old.

I remember the day vividly. I shared with my mother and father my hopes, dreams and aspirations and they said, “We’ve got a plan”.

I was enrolled in speech lessons and started doing theatre productions.

Seven years later, I had virtually no stutter and I started my radio career in Christchurch at ZM in the same very building as my father and grandfather and the rest is history.

I've worked in film and television including fronting the ASB Bank for 4 years which won the Supreme Gong at the TVNZ/Marketing Magazine Awards. A part time voice artist (see demo reel below), quiz host and MC, I bring all this presentation knowledge to the table to help you present well on camera and get attention for your business.

When I was a young fella, all I wanted to do was follow the footsteps of my father and grandfather into show business and radio broadcasting.

I was especially proud (still am) of my heritage which dates back to 1937 in Christchurch when Jack Maybury was on 3ZB and went on to host national quiz shows like Quiz Kids, Scoop the Pool and Lever Hit Parade.

He went on to give a young Selwyn Toogood his start on national radio in 1946.

Most of us are too young to remember those days but the Maybury name was synonymous with entertainment, quiz shows and radio.
